What are some fun affordable activities to do in Maui in January?

Going on a 7 day family holiday with 8 adults. We are staying in a condo so won’t be able to sign up like usual at the hotel. We like to do anything fun outdoors, eco-adventure, and relaxing…we are up for anything. Just need some memorable moments to look back on. If there is any good reliable websites that can help please let me know. Thanks

My husband and I loved the Hana lava cave tour… it was just us and our tour guide, who owned the caves (how cool would THAT be to OWN your own lava tubes… those lava tubes had endless places to explore!). One of the great things about the lava tubes are that there are no bats, bugs or other creepy-crawly-type things in there… just the hardened lava.

We also loved our day-trip to Lanai – we got to snorkel in 2 spots, plus walk around the island a bit. On the boat ride back, we found a bunch of dolphins who swam right alongside our boat! I could have reached out and touched them – they were THAT close!! It was absolutely amazing!

Since you specified affordable, I’d highly recommend driving the Road to Hana – if you can, allow for 1 day there and 1 day back – that way, you can see EVERYTHING along the way, and all it will cost you is gas money (plus hotel if you stay the night in Hana).

Also, if you go a bit past Hana, you can hike the 4.5 mile trail that ends at the 400′ Waimoku falls – to save money, you can go without a guide – We saw absolutely breathtaking views – bamboo forests, jungles, waterfalls – it’s just incredible!

Another FREE activity is snorkeling at the famous Black Rock on Kaanapali beach – there are TONS of marine life there, and it’s known as a great spot for beginners.

Another cheap activity is driving up to the summit of Mt. Haleakala – don’t think you HAVE to go at sunrise either! If early mornings aren’t your thing, you’ll still get great views a little later on – we went late morning and it was still awesome! Plus, if you like to hike, you can research ahead of time some of the trails up there – the views are wickedly awesome, and unlike anything else on Maui.
